Pool Surround with Limited Access

Ultra Base panels have proven to be the ideal solution for areas with limited access or where the use of heavy equipment could cause serious damage to the surrounding area.

The Problem

The homeowner had invested in a beautiful backyard project featuring a stone patio and hot tub area with stair down to another stone patio and inground pool. Unfortunately, the landscape designers utilized natural grass for both a functional walking area and decorative strip next to the lower pool and patio.

This natural grass area proved virtually impossible to maintain so an alternative was needed.

The Solution

Since the homeowner still wanted to maintain the original look with a grass area next to the pool and patio, they decided to replace the natural grass with artificial grass. However, the thought of using a standard crushed rock base in this area was not appealing at all.

No one involved wanted to hand dig a 5 or 6 inch deep base and fill it with crushed rock. Doing this would not only be incredibly labor intensive, but the digging and transport of all of this earth and rock would risk damage to the pool and patio.

The Ultra Base Advantage

Since drainage was also a major concern, our team specified the Ultra Base Omni panel for the project. These panels required a very minimal base, weighed less than 2 pounds per panel and would provide both the structural support and drainage required for the space.

Furthermore, the Omni panels could be installed by simply removing the top layer of natural grass, adding a small layer of crushed rock and covering with a geotextile stabilization fabric.

The Result

After preparing the foundation, drainage path and Omni panel base, the artificial grass was laid on top of the flat, barbed surface and secured.

Now, the homeowners enjoy a beautiful, yet maintenance-free grass area next to their pool that looks great year round, drains well and is soft and comfortable.
