Backyard Play Area
Bill Collins with Putter's Edge of South Florida was given the challenge to build a high quality backyard field for a global music icon’s large waterfront home. The homeowner wanted a safe, clean surface for his children to practice soccer and play.
The Land
The goal was to build an 84' x 34' field in the space, but this demanding project required removal of over 50 trees and heavy landscaping.
Plus, since the field was being built in the middle of the property, there were many issues related to drainage and access. The team would need to create a drainage system able to handle Florida’s heavy summer rains and without the use of heavy equipment.
The Ultra Base Solution
Bill decided that Ultra Base was ideal for the job. While it required over 400 Champion panels, these panels reduced the need for tons of crushed rock and provided the vertical and horizontal drainage Bill desired for the project.
Plus, building the field on the Ultra Base system provided the "true ball roll" the homeowner desired while adding some added cushioning or safety to the field.
The End Result
The turf was installed in 12 foot sections with fringe around the entire field and the entry area from the house. The field was finished with 18” rubber tiles to provide a runoff area and finish the look.
